VICTORIA'S LOG

The Tomas Tomas team landed in Obregon Mexico on June 22, 2002 and installed Phase III upgrades to the library in Alamos. It was 114 F. With the help of many local people, they ran in 180 feet of new underground electrical cable, new electrical panels, installed air conditioning,  wall mounted video equipment along with 50 video tapes of documentaries and educational films for children in Spanish, added 69 new books, 100 new dictionaries for the 6th grade Personal Book Program, installed steel bars for the windows, added 5 new book shelve modules, a world globe, completed the book inventory, added 4 more local people to the library committee for a total of 7 and setup the beginnings of a Pin Pale program between Tualatin High School students in Oregon and Revolucion School in Alamos. The library now has 1249 books and is currently being used by 600 children per day.

Total expenditures for Phase III was $5,126.17

Thanks again for another great project --
We sincerely thank Jorge Valenzuela, Luis Leyva, Emma Michel, Charley and Carmalita of FAI for bringing us into their homes, providing transportation, connections, setting up places to stay, and for their never ending work of lovingly helping children. We thank Cuco the brilliant carpenter and cabinet maker, Manuel Bacuanero the welder for his great laugh and excellent steel work, and Rosario Castro Arias and son for the electrical work. We thank Juan Zoilo Lopez the director of the school for his spirit and founding belief and for his efforts in organizing the men and children who helped in the digging and installation of the electrical lines and for providing transportation to Navajoa for supplies. We thank Maye for her weeks of works doing the book inventory and card cataloging. Again we thank Jesus Gil - Superintendent of schools, Professor Juan Zoilo Lopez, and Professor Juan Torres for providing the building for the library. We thank the many wonderful children who helped in the grounds cleanup, carrying materials and electrical installation in 114 F temperature. We also thank our publishers: Ari Nurmikumpu for his discount for the 100 dictionaries and Jose Maria Tavares Castillose for providing generous discounts for the educational video tapes and books and Dr. Brian Shears of Sonoma State University for his sage advice and Laura Goldman of Santa Rosa Junior College for her moral support in the project. We also want to thank George Shepard of Hood River, Oregon for connecting us with Dede Moore who helps coordination the Tualatin High Communicare program and Victoria Vieira of the College of Marin for acting as project translator and keeper of the log and for her loving care in helping Marisol. We want to thank our donors: the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer Foundation, the Students of the Communicare Program, and 9 Generous Donors who made it financially possible and to the spirit of Mari and Marisol. We welcome and are encouraged by the new members of the library committee: Juan Zoilo Lopez, Rosario Cubedo Corral (Maye), Emma Michel, Jesus Mafilde Veia, Maria del Carmen Bay (Carmelita), Maria Eisira Corral, and Maria Ester.
